The buzz is back! The Literacy Council of St. Petersburg is hosting its annual Spelling Bee for Grown-Ups fundraiser tomorrow, Friday, April 17, 2026.
Here is the authentic breakdown of the event:
Event Details
-
When: Friday, April 17, 2026 | 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
-
Where: Coastal Creative (2201 1st Ave S., St. Petersburg, FL)
-
Purpose: A fundraiser to support adult literacy in Pinellas County.
🐝 How the Bee Works
Unlike the nerve-wracking school bees of our youth, this one is a team effort and much more social:
-
Teams: 10 pre-registered teams of 2 to 4 adults compete together.
-
Cheat to Win: Audience members can actually “save” their favorite teams by purchasing “skip a word” or “spell again” options—essentially buying their way to the next round for charity.
-
Vibe: Expect adult beverages, snacks, and “un-bee-lievably” pun-heavy commentary. There is also a strong emphasis on theatricality, with teams often sporting creative names and costumes.
Attendance
-
General Admission: $15 (for those who want to watch the chaos without the pressure of spelling “synecdoche” in front of a crowd).
-
Registration: Team slots usually sell out early at $120/team, but you can still snag spectator tickets to cheer them on.
It’s a great way to support the Literacy Council’s mission to help the estimated 10% of adults in Pinellas County who struggle with basic reading skills.
Planning to head over? Remember that parking at Coastal Creative is limited, so the organizers suggest looking for street parking or using the grass lot on 3rd Ave S.
