AquaFence Donated a Flood Barrier System to the Florida Aquarium

The Florida Aquarium just got a major upgrade to its storm armor, and it didn’t cost the nonprofit a single dime.

AquaFence, the global flood protection company that’s been quietly planting roots in Tampa, announced Monday that it’s donating an engineered flood barrier system to The Florida Aquarium, the same technology that kept Tampa General Hospital up and running through Hurricane Helene. Tampa General Hospital and Strategic Property Partners are also chipping in with financial support to make the initiative happen.

If you’ve been following Tampa’s hurricane story, you already know why this matters. When Helene and Milton rolled through, floodwaters crept right up to the Aquarium’s doors. Staff had to scramble, relocating penguins, moon jellies, snakes, lizards, turtles, and alligators to higher ground. It’s the kind of emergency protocol that nobody wants to activate twice. The AquaFence system is designed to make sure they won’t have to.

“This is about helping protect something that means so much to Tampa,” said Patrik Hansson, AquaFence’s chief revenue officer. “The Aquarium plays such an important role in our community, and we’re committed to helping strengthen its preparedness moving forward.”

And that commitment has receipts. During Hurricane Helene, AquaFence’s barrier system protected Tampa General Hospital well enough that the facility was able to continue operating through the storm, including completing 30 patient procedures. When a flood barrier helps doctors keep the lights on during a major hurricane, it’s earned its reputation.

What’s at stake for the Aquarium

The Aquarium’s president and CEO Roger Germann wasn’t shy about what this donation means for the institution. The facility sits right on Tampa’s waterfront, which has always made it one of those places that feels exposed when hurricane season rolls around. He noted that the system will protect the infrastructure and some of the world’s most endangered animal species housed inside.

“The protection it will provide also helps us maintain business continuity, which is vital in fulfilling our shared purpose and honoring our commitment to our community,” Germann said.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor called out the significance of a private company identifying a community vulnerability and actually doing something about it. That’s the kind of civic participation that’s easy to applaud and harder to replicate, and it’s worth noting that AquaFence only officially set up its Tampa Bay office at Water Street in 2025. The company’s reportedly in the process of moving its American headquarters to the city, so this donation also doubles as a pretty strong introduction to the neighborhood.

More than just good neighbors

Strategic Property Partners CEO Josh Taube, whose firm developed Water Street Tampa, put it pretty plainly when he noted that The Florida Aquarium is one of downtown Tampa’s defining destinations, and that protecting it is simply good for everybody who calls this city home.

The broader shift here is worth paying attention to. Tampa’s been reactive about hurricane prep for too long. This partnership signals something worth celebrating: a city and its businesses choosing to get ahead of the next storm before it arrives.

The penguins, for one, are probably pretty relieved.
